Entering A Tourney: Opting into a smaller MAIN EVENT

Each MAIN EVENT tourney is so large, there's a chance it won't fill up in time to run it. Thankfully, MAIN EVENT tourneys do not have to completely fill in order to be run!

When we have to run a MAIN EVENT tourney at less-than-maximum capacity, we don't scale back the prizes—we still pay out every penny of the the prize money originally listed for that tourney.

Obviously we can't pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money to participants of a tourney with only fifty entries. So MAIN EVENT tourneys have to reach a minimum number of entries to avoid being canceled. The minimum number depends on the original size of the tourney, as displayed in this diagram.

Minimum entries required

For business reasons, we have to reserve the right to cancel any tourney that fails to reach the minimum number of entries. But we understand that if you have secured an entry in the MAIN EVENT tourney, either purchased up front or earned via SATELLITE tourney, then you are probably (hopefully!) very excited about your chance to win some big prize money.

Of course we don't want our customers to go away disappointed! So when a MAIN EVENT tourney fails to reach its minimum number of entries, we move all the entries of the canceled MAIN EVENT tourney into one or two shorter, smaller MAIN EVENT tourneys. Each scaled-down tourney pays out great cash prizes of its own, though not as many total dollars as the original (canceled) tourney—but there aren't as many participants to compete against in the smaller tourney either. Every other rule remains exactly the same—it's still the same game!

Example. A six-round MAIN EVENT tourney opens with 2,430 maximum entries. According to the diagram above, the minimum number of entries is 1,800. If the tourney reaches 1,800 entries, all is well—the tourney will go off as originally scheduled. If the minimum number is not reached, we'll run one or two FIVE-ROUND tourneys instead, each with a maximum of 810 entries. The minimum number of entries for a tourney this size is 600, so if the original tourney had:

  • Fewer than 600 entries - No smaller tourney will be run. All entrants will receive account credit equal to the tourney's entry fee. This includes entrants who won their entries in the MAIN EVENT tourney in SATELLITE tourneys.
  • 600–810 entries - All entries will be moved to one smaller tourney.
  • 811–1,199 entries - The first 810 entries will be moved to one smaller tourney. The remainder will receive credit.
  • 1,200–1,620 entries - All entries will be moved to two smaller tourneys in equal numbers.
  • 1,621–1,799 entries - The first 1,620 entries will be moved to two smaller tourneys. The remainder will receive credit.

We'll move teams to the smaller tourneys in the order the teams entered the original tourney. If you receive account credit, you can use your account balance to enter any other tourney on the site, including upcoming MAIN EVENT tourneys in other sports.

Here's the kicker...

For legal reasons, we can't just move you to a smaller tourney without your permission. YOU HAVE TO GIVE US EXPLICIT PERMISSION TO MOVE YOU TO A SMALLER TOURNEY if the original is canceled. To do so, simply go to your team page, click the radio button that reads "Yes! You may move my team to the smaller tourney if this one doesn't fill," then click the "Save" button. You can do this any time before the original tourney's entry deadline.

If the tourney reaches its minimum number of entries, this form will disappear and the original tourney will start as usual.

If you choose the "No. You may not move my team to the smaller tourney if this one doesn't fill" radio button, you will simply receive account credit if the tourney is canceled.
